
Larry Brown is an educator, director, arts administrator, and writer. He taught and directed in secondary schools and colleges throughout his career. Other professional experience includes five years in marketing, management roles with the American Revels Company and Haymarket Dinner Theatre, and Managing Director of SPARC – School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community.
Together with his wife, Jennie Brown, Larry developed SPARC into the largest community-based performing arts education program in Virginia. He has served on the boards of the Richmond Shakespeare Company, The ArtsFund, and Richmond Performing Arts Alliance to develop Richmond’s CenterStage (now Dominion Arts Center).
His grants and honors include an Associated Writing Programs Fellowship, studying with poet Naomi Shihab Nye; English-Speaking Union Award (University of London); Old Dominion Foundation Fellowship (University of Virginia); R.E.B. Award for Teaching Excellence; and jointly with Jennie, the Theresa Pollak Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts. Now retired, Larry devotes time to writing and volunteering in the restoration of a historic Rosenwald School in Campbell County, VA.
